64. The Vedaranyam Salt Satyagraha
(April 13- April 28, 1930)
The Vedaranyam Salt Satyagraha was a civil disobedience movement led by C. Rajagopalachari, a prominent Indian leader and follower of Mahatma Gandhi. On 13 April, 1930, under his leadership, some 150 satyagrahis marched 240 km from Tiruchirappalli to Vedaranyam, a small coastal town in the then Tanjore District of Tamil Nadu. It took place as part of the larger Salt Satyagraha launched by Gandhiji against British salt taxes. This protest also created awareness in the south about the importance of wearing khadi and the need to fight caste discrimination. The campaign ended on April 28, 1930, when the participants were arrested by the police. C. Rajagopalachari was sentenced to six-months of imprisonment in the Trichinopoly Central Prison.
