36. The Curzon Wyllie assassination (July 1, 1909)
Curzon Wyllie assassination, also known as the Delhi Conspiracy Case, was a significant event during the Indian independence movement. The incident occurred on July 1, 1909, when Sir William Curzon Wyllie, a British official, was assassinated by Madan Lal Dhingra, an Indian revolutionary. Dhingra, a young student studying in London, was deeply influenced by the nationalist movement and wanted to avenge the injustices and exploitation faced by Indians under British colonial rule. He shot Curzon Wyllie at a public event in London as an act of protest against British imperialism in India. The assassination of Curzon Wyllie further fuelled the nationalist movement in India and brought attention to the radicalisation of some Indian youth in their struggle for independence.
